Enchantment Calculator
One wrong anvil click wastes thirty levels and still shows "Too Expensive!" See exact cost before you merge.
Anvil costs above 39 levels show "Too Expensive!" in survival. Prior work penalty +1 each time an item is used in an anvil — rename, repair, or enchant counts.
0 = fresh item, 1 = used once, 2 = twice, etc.
Combining Sharp IV + Sharp III → Sharp V, for example.

Anvil combine order that avoids the cap
Combine enchanted books with each other first — not onto the item. Apply the merged super-book to gear in one operation. Rename last if needed. Each direct book-to-item application adds prior work penalty to the item.
What adds to anvil level cost
| Factor | Effect on cost |
|---|---|
| Enchantment tier | Higher levels (Sharp V) cost more base levels |
| Prior work penalty | Increases each time item used in anvil |
| Renaming | Flat penalty on top of merge cost |
| Conflicting enchants | Cannot combine — calculator blocks invalid pairs |
| 39 level cap | Survival hard limit — cannot bypass without commands |
Why SMP servers care about anvil costs
Economy plugins sell enchanted gear — knowing real costs helps price items. Custom enchant plugins may differ from vanilla; this calculator uses Java Edition baseline mechanics.
How to use this tool
- 1
Select item type and material
Choose sword, pickaxe, armour piece, etc. Material affects enchant availability and cost (diamond vs netherite).
- 2
Add enchantments to combine
Select books or existing enchants on the item. The calculator shows level cost and whether it exceeds the 39-level survival cap.
- 3
Adjust order if too expensive
If "Too Expensive" appears, merge books together first before applying to the item. Rename last. Reorder enchants to minimise prior work penalty.
Frequently asked questions
What is the anvil level cost cap in survival?
Survival refuses operations costing more than 39 experience levels. "Too Expensive!" means prior-work penalty plus enchant costs exceeded the cap — not insufficient XP.
What is prior work penalty?
Each anvil use on an item increases future costs on that item. Combine enchanted books together first, then apply once to gear. Rename last.
How do I get all enchantments on a sword without hitting the cap?
Merge books in pairs before applying to sword. On diamond with Mending, cap often hits around Sharp V + Looting III + Unbreaking III — prioritise enchants.
Does renaming increase anvil cost?
Yes. Rename in the final step after all enchantments, or skip renaming on intermediate books.
Are anvil costs different in Java vs Bedrock?
39-level survival cap and prior-work penalty are the same in Java. This calculator targets Java Edition costs.
What enchantments conflict on the same item?
Protection types conflict (only one protection per armour). Sharpness, Smite, and Bane conflict on swords. Silk Touch and Fortune conflict on tools. The calculator reflects vanilla conflict rules.
Does looting affect anvil cost?
Looting III adds significant cost on swords. Combine Looting book with other books before applying to the sword to reduce prior work on the final item.
